BEDS Day 28 – Favorite Book Series

Blog Every Day in September

What is your favorite books series?

I’d have to say that my ultimate favorite would be the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I grew up on the series. It was first published in 1997. I was only 10 at the time but I was hooked. The entire series is such a well crafted adventure. You can lose yourself in Hogwarts and Diagon Alley.

I remember first finding Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone at my school library and I was instantly taken to a magical world.

The characters were so easy to connect with. I was a school student and so were they. No I didn’t go to a school to learn to be a witch or a wizard but it was nice to be able to dream of a world like that.

BEDS Day 27 – Self-Run Promotions

Blog Every Day in September – Self Run Promotions

We are all in need of promotion as authors. Whether you’re writing a book or a web-based comic book, we all need to promote those endeavors.

So far, to promote my work or other’s work, I have three main locations.

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. WordPress

These three are great ways to promote. They are the most widely used social media networks but there are a lot more ways to promote as well.

Check out the 50 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Promote Your Book post online.

Do you have any ideas for ways of promoting your book?

BEDS Day 21 – WebComic!

Blog Every Day in September – WebComic Promotion!

A good friend of mine, Arden Power (@ArdenPowell) has a new webcomic premiering with the first 5 pages going live on October 4th!

The first thing that you will notice about her webcomic is the color choice. She uses color combinations that make you feel as if you have just stepped into a fairy tale.

One thing that catches my eye is the elegant, historical feel of the comic. I feel like I am stepping into an ornate ball room with the band playing and people dancing. I feel like I should be eating finger sandwiches and sipping tea while reading.

Can’t wait for the 4th for the premiere!

BEDS Day 20 – Favorite Writing Book

What is your favorite book on the craft of novel writing?

For me, it would have to be ‘Beyond The Words‘ by Bonnie Goldberg.

Her’s was one of the first creative writing books that I ever read. I loved the sections on percolation the most. It talks about even if you are not putting words on paper, you are thinking about your characters, scenes, settings, and such. You don’t have to be putting actually words down to be writing and norishing your writerly self.

Your writerly self is also another good topic in the book. It talks about taking time to get your writing self in working order just as you would your everyday, regular self.

I always keep her book on my desk or near my bed. It’s usually always in reach.

BEDS Day 18 – Writer Promotion

Strike Up the Band, Book 3 in the Wilde Love series by my good friend Sam Burns will be releasing on Wednesday, September 27th!Strike Up the Band (Wilde Love Book 3) by [Burns, Sam]

Jake McKenna doesn’t want to be here. He doesn’t want to be on tour, he doesn’t want to be playing guitar, and he definitely doesn’t want anything to do with Brian Mulholland. He’s biding his time until the tour is over so that he can walk away from his music career for good.

Brian didn’t ask to be here. Okay, maybe he did. Fine, you know what? He wanted this. He may not like the circumstances that have landed him in his dream job, but he’s not going to let anyone ruin it for him, even if it’s the insanely hot guitarist he’s had a crush on since the first time he saw the band play. He will win over Jake McKenna if it’s the last thing he ever does.

She’s on a roll!! A book every two months! If her past books are any indication, this is going to be an awesome roller-coaster ride of  a read that will keep you hooked all the way till the end!

BEDS Day 6

Outlining

What do you do to outline your novel or short story?

Do you create extremely detailed character sheets? Do you cut out pictures from magazines?

One thing I like to do is find blueprint websites for floor plans and such for my characters homes.

Another fun home inspiration tool would be to play The Sims.

For characters faces/appearance, I use Google or Bing images for inspiration.

For my own outlines, I have pantsed mostly up to the this point but this year I am going to be doing character sheets and detailed plot point outlines.

What are you outlining methods? Share your tips and tricks in the comments section below!

BEDS Day 4 – Coffee Corner

Blog Every Day in September – Day 4

Coffee Corner

Sometimes when I need to get away from my normal writing space of my bedroom and my desk, I take a trip to a local coffee shop.

Is it Starbucks? It sure is. There are a few lesser known locations that I have gone to but mostly I stick to Starbucks. I’ll find a spot in a corner and pull out my laptop and write while I sip my tea. Black tea, unsweetened with extra ice, if you’re wondering how I take my tea.

Sometimes I will go to the grocery store and spend a good amount of time in the tea and coffee section. My most recent find was a Pumpkin flavored coffee. Yes I am one of ‘those’ people! I love anything and everything pumpkin and/or pumpkin spice!

Fall is one of my favorite times of year for coffee and tea. Apple spiced teas are wonderful as well. Apple cider too.

I could go on and on for hours about my love of seasonal teas and coffees.

What are you favorite teas and coffees? Do you have a favorite coffee shop you frequent?

BEDS Day 3

Blog Every Day in September – Day 3

Are you a pantser or a plotter? Do you run head strong into a story with nothing known about it? Do you have everything meticulously planned out before you put pen to paper or hands to keyboard?

I fall into a category I first heard of from my friend and fellow author, Burgess Taylor. She can be found on WordPress and Youtube.

Her term was ‘plotster’. You plot things out but you pants as well.

I find that I try to have a pretty good idea of the plot from A to Z but if something changes in the middle, I allow the unknown to step in and see where the story goes from there.

I have been participating in Nanowrimo since 2012. I won in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

All of those years was I mostly pantsed my way through the month and I wound up having to scramble at the end to get my 50k words done on time.

This year is going to be different. This year I am using the months of September and October to plan out my novel for November to not have any issues this year!

How do you work on your novel? Do plan it out or do you just go with what comes to mind as it comes to you?

Let me know down in the comments!

BEDS Day 2 – Ideas

Where do you get your story ideas?

For me, they’re sometimes easier found than others. I can go for days without being able to come up with a new idea but then there will be days when I have too many ideas and not enough time to work with them all.

I people watch. I listen to snippets of dialogue.

Ideas are all around us. We just have to be observant of them.

BEDS Day 1

Hello Everyone!

This was supposed to go up yesterday but after work I was exhausted.

So, the title may seem a bit weird but I’m doing a challenge of my own for the money of September.

BEDS – Blog Every Day in September.

I have wanted to get back to my blog for some time now and I found a link to a set of 30 prompts for writers.

I’ll post the link up later as I don’t have it readily available.

So for the next month of September I will be doing a blog each day.

I will also be planning and outlining for November Nanowrimo project of which I barely have an idea for so far.

As I am fixing to leave for work for Day 2, stay tuned for a second blog post later today!

Happy Blogging and Happy Writing!
